Letter from The Secretary General

Dearest Delegates and Faculty Advisors,

It is with great pride and honour that I welcome you all to the twentieth iteration of the Rato Bangala School Model United Nations conference.
My name is Aditya Raj, a senior at Rato Bangala School, and it is my privilege to serve as the Secretary-General of RBSMUN XX. My journey with RBSMUN has been one full of thrill. Inspired by my brother, who had won countless MUN awards, I had always had a burning desire to do the same. And so, at the first RBSMUN I attended, I was dead set on winning from the start. But with no skills to back it up, I was much too far away from my goal. With each iteration of RBSMUN, however, I learned that even more than winning, I enjoyed the journey—the three days full of sleepless nights, non-stop debate, and new interactions. RBSMUN has definitely played a major role in shaping who I am and my aspirations. From my first-ever conference as a delegate to the very last as Secretary-General, I have enjoyed each one. And now that I have the honour of carrying on this legacy, I will do everything in my power to make these three days an enriching and thought-provoking experience.
Since its inception in 2005, RBSMUN has strived to create an environment that facilitates stimulating exchanges coupled with the drive to bring forth change. A pioneer of MUN culture in Nepal, this student-run conference fosters vital skills that reach far beyond the boundaries of international relations, preparing delegates for the highs and lows in various facets of life. By cultivating the values of negotiation, cooperation, and diplomacy, RBSMUN aspires to deliver a memorable experience that shapes delegates into future leaders.
If there is anything we have learnt living amongst global crises such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the gun violence epidemic, it is that the world has never been this unstable politically. It is therefore imperative that we build peace against this increasingly polarised world that we find ourselves in. This year’s theme, “conflict prevention and peace building,” embodies this very thought, allowing exploration of issues longing to be addressed in hopes of developing hardy systems leading into the uncertain future.
This year’s selection of committees is carefully curated—ranging from simulations of the Red Sea Crisis in the United Nations Security Council in a transformative setting, leading up to 2024, to the Futuristic Joint Crisis Cabinet, harnessing the untold conflict of World War III and navigating its issues. This, along with the General Assembly led by the president of the security council on the final day, delivers to delegates a full, hands-on UN experience.
By bringing together some of the most promising students from across the region to emerge as better leaders, I, the Secretary-General, hope to make this RBSMUN a transformative experience—one that delegates will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Until December,
Aditya Raj
