About the Committee
Agenda: Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding in the Sahel Region
Committee Email: au@ratobangala.edu.np
The African Union Committee is an agile and historically concerned committee which positions delegates at the center of an increasingly regional, and the most concerning, threat: the jihadist insurgencies massacring the Sahel. This committee is anchored in diplomacy and crisis management, allowing delegates to grapple with post-colonial governance, permeable borders, and multi-national extremism which has come to define African security in contemporary times. In our simulation, we reconstruct the AU's Peace and Security Council with greater powers to make decisions and control strategic blocs across the continent. Delegates will become policymakers and regional leaders who must navigate the balancing act of military aggression, economic fortitude, and governance which is multi-lateral and inclusive in nature, in the face of violent extremism.
While the African Union in reality faces a lack of funding, coordination, and enforcement, this committee seeks to overcome those challenges. It dares delegates to respond to a challenge that has outsmarted classical solutions, attacking the continent from within. From reframing counter-terrorism strategies to fortifying governance in the bordering regions which are fragile and susceptible, delegates are welcomed to draw plans which are realistic, actionable and solutions-focused, not stifled by politics.
This committee favors regional discussion over top-down intervention and stresses continental cooperation over reliance on outside parties. In order to create a new strategy for Sahelian peace, delegates will take inspiration from historical legacies, including colonial border configurations and previous military interventions. The African Union Committee invites delegates to determine the future of African security, by Africans, for Africans, whether through regional security frameworks, institutional reform, or diplomacy.

Moderator
Aaryak Duwadi
Nobody really knows what’s going on in Aaryak’s head, not even Aaryak. One minute you’re nervously waiting for the committee to start, and the next he’s cracking a joke, handing someone a piece of chocolate, and saying something oddly spot-on without even trying.
He’s unpredictable in the best way. He’s not the loudest in the room or the one listing off facts, but when he speaks, his words just land. People laugh, they relax a bit, and somehow things feel less intimidating. Whether it’s a dumb joke or random advice halfway through a session, he keeps the vibe fun without taking over.
Aaryak’s the type who genuinely doesn’t care if you mess up; he just wants you to have a good time and grab the mic. And if you’re nervous? He’ll roast you a little, then cheer you on like you just changed UN policy.
Being in a room with him feels like being part of a slightly chaotic social experiment, but the kind you’re glad you signed up for. So speak up, don’t take it too seriously, and. if nothing else, you’ll probably leave with a chocolate and a good story.
